Arashiyama is one of Kyoto’s most breathtaking destinations, filled with natural beauty, historic sites, and unique experiences. On our visit, my husband and I explored the famous Bamboo Grove and hiked up to Iwatayama Monkey Park—an adventure that took us by surprise!

We started our day early at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and I highly recommend arriving before 9 AM to avoid crowds. Walking through the towering green stalks felt almost surreal—like stepping into another world. The sound of the bamboo swaying in the wind was incredibly peaceful.

🐵 Afternoon: Hiking to Iwatayama Monkey Park

After strolling through Arashiyama, we decided to visit Iwatayama Monkey Park, thinking it would be a short walk—but we were in for a surprise!

The hike up was steeper and longer than expected, but the reward at the top was incredible. Not only did we get to see wild Japanese macaques, but the panoramic view of Kyoto was absolutely stunning!

✔️ Hike duration: About 20–30 minutes
✔️ Entry fee: ~600 yen
✔️ Best part: Feeding the monkeys inside the observation hut!

📌 Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially if visiting in summer.

🍵 Café Break: Relaxing in Arashiyama

After our hike, we needed a break, so we stopped by a charming café near the Bamboo Grove. I remember enjoying a delicious matcha latte while soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Arashiyama has several great cafes and tea houses, so I highly recommend stopping for a rest.

Some great options include:
☕ Arabica Kyoto Arashiyama – A popular spot with a river view
🍵 Sagano-Yu Café – A trendy café in a renovated bathhouse
🍡 Yojiya Café – Famous for matcha sweets and their signature latte art

🌉 Evening: Strolling Across Togetsukyo Bridge

To end our day, we took a leisurely walk across Togetsukyo Bridge, the symbol of Arashiyama. With the Katsura River flowing below and the lush mountains in the background, it was the perfect way to wrap up our adventure.

If you have time, you can also explore the Saga-Toriimoto preserved street, filled with traditional Kyoto-style houses and shops selling local crafts and snacks.
